Why is wanting to make an entertaining movie, to you meaning I want to make a cheap movie.

Jaws is one of my fave movies. It entertained the hell out of me. I still dont like to swim in the sea.

I watched Saving Private Ryan again on dvd just the otherday. Im sorry to say it but I found that entertaining too. Is that bad of me?

Since were talking Speilberg Raiders Of The Lost Ark is one of my faves of all time too.

If I had to lower myself to making movies like that for the rest of my life. You know what? Ill live with it.

Mr Skin, in response to your previous post which you thoughtfully re-edited... I am not bitter. I only came across like that cos I wrote an arsy reply to `Man With Ideas` thred when I was havin a bad hair day. Also I come across like an arrogant twat because I don't really come here to make chit chat at the mo... I'm more interested in stirring stuff up and seeing which side of the fence people settle on.

I get the feeling your a college lad. This gives you access to equipment and people, including people studying many different things.

College is really exciting but it's important to keep that going afterwards. Out here in the film industry it's really easy to let the work you do for others completely fill your time up. Suddenly you find it harder to meet architects or botanists as you're spending most of your time at work. Similarly you find it hard to get your own stuff together. Whereas college is streamlined for making stuff.. the world outside is bloody tough. I'm having to fight every inch of the way to get my shit together. I'm writing scripts, I'm filming stuff, I'm making connections, but all the while I've also gotta hit deadlines for movie projects which I'm working on for other people.

There are loads who come out of film school who really want to work on films. I've already got that job.... but I'm driven to direct. I'm not bitter about working for others... I love it.. but I'm a bloody tough cookie and I'm driven by my `vision` to want to get my own projects rolling.

And Crafty... you'll know exactly where I'm coming from then. Life, for me, is about pushing yourself into bold and different situations... not treading the middle path... just like film should be.

I'm sorry but surely we've come to the point now where this whole `entertainment` vs `art` polarity can be seen for the sham it is. `art` can be entertaining (Jeff Koons) and `entertainment` can be arty (Bladerunner). They are not opposed so why do people persist in putting them against each other.

The real argument here is between `palatable` and `non-palatable` or `easy viewing` and `difficult viewing`. Art can be easy and art can be hard. But entertainment, by dictionary definition, is aimed at being easy. Sure there are moments when films which seek to entertain start to `look` a little difficult but really they are pulled back and packaged in a more palatable form.

A bunch of guys here have come out with the statement that they believe all films should be entertaining or at least that they are entirely approaching films from the angle that they MUST be entertaining.
I never once made the statement that I wanted to make arty aloof films with no appeal... those words were put in my mouth by the `entertainers`. I just said I don't approach my films from the angle that they must be entertaining.

All good films MUST be engaging (as miker says it's far more appropriate). An arty film which is not engaging is a bunch of crap... a `howard the duck` which is not engaging is also a failed endeavour. The debate here is about quite how we should talior our films to `engage` the audience. There are those that believe engagement comes through entertainment and following the middle road. Even though that path stands more chance of leading to riches... I'm far more interested in exploring the psychological nature of film.

miker , what films was Spielberg making before Schindler's list and private ryan? The ones that got him in a position to make said films.....the whole time he was making indiana jones films he had the ability and intention to make Schindlers list....then recently he made AI, not exactly the most educating responsible film.
he probably knows more about the industry than people on this board, and demonstrates his flexibility by making a wide range of films.
you want to be educated by films, maybe you should close the dictionary and open a history book, like most people. you'd learn a bit more about people who fought and died for their countries than private ryan tells you.

I can understand what you mean about deadlines. Theres a lot of pressure here too, I've got write and direct my own stuff and then do assistant lights for someone else. I'm going on shoots all the time and sometimes i'm completly exhausted.

What kind of stuff are you working on? When it comes down to it I don't think anyone really sets out to entertain, they set out to express themselves. Do what they wanna do. And if an audience finds it entertaining, good. And if not, nevermind-as long as the film ended up how you wanted it.

I mean I could entertain my mates my making a video of attractive girls kissing each other, but I aint gonna do it. Unless it's critical to the story i'm trying to tell of course!

I'm kinda doing the reverse Generic Skinhead. I got into films without going to film school. I'm working on a half hour `short` script and I'm also shooting quick shorts in order to get my skills up. I work in post and am reasonably established there. My work involves alot of cinematography and I'm hoping, after maybe a stint at film school, to be able to apply this in real world situations... i.e. a DOP.

I am more of a cinematographer friendly director... looking (at the moment) to create visually strong worlds within the frame work of very simple narratives. Finally, after a long stint of 16 hour days, I should be heading out this weekend to do my first shoot of the year... yippeeee!!! perhaps then, when I've got something out of the mill and released my angst, I won't come across as such an arsehole.

As you might of guaged by now... I'm a `serious` director. I'm not the kinda guy who's gonna go off and shoot a comedy. I love european and world cinema. I come from an art college background.. so there's themes in my life which I'm kinda driven to explore.

Enough of the cv... back to the abuse!! Which of you bunch of cunts wants to spark up another thred which burns a hole through my mind?
